Cuts and scrapes are often everyday occurrences. Most wounds don’t need special treatment and will heal on their own or under the care of your primary physician. But what happens when that wound doesn’t look like it’s getting better?
Why isn’t My Wound Healing?
Wounds normally begin healing within 2-3 days and should be fully healed within 2 weeks. Deeper or more extensive wounds may take up to 6 weeks to fully heal. If you aren’t seeing any improvement within those timeframes, you could be dealing with a chronic wound.
Individuals with chronic wounds frequently have underlying conditions such as bedsores, diabetes, vascular disease, obesity, congestive heart failure, and renal failure.
Chronic wounds that are commonly treated at wound care centers include diabetic ulcers, vascular ulcers, pressure ulcers, non-healing surgical wounds, and radiation therapy wounds. They also treat burns, cuts and lacerations, bone infections, and traumatic injuries.
Delaying care from a wound specialist can be very costly and at times have severe consequences. Diabetes-related amputations are a common result of diabetic foot ulcers. Patients often lose their foot or their entire lower leg due to poor circulation and infection caused by their wound, which is entirely preventable with early medical intervention.
