Decision helps preserve supplies and access for emergency, inpatient, stroke, cardiac, and other critically ill patients

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Catholic Health is currently experiencing the effects of a broader national supply challenge involving iodinated contrast used in certain CT imaging exams. As a result, beginning Monday, May 11, 2026, Catholic Health will temporarily adjust scheduling for selected non-emergency outpatient CT scans that require this contrast. Emergency imaging and all medically urgent studies will continue without interruption.

For patients whose appointments may be affected, care teams will reach out directly to discuss next steps, including rescheduling or alternative imaging options when appropriate.

“We made this decision proactively—and out of an abundance of caution—because our patients and their care are always at the center of what we do,” said Dr. Victor Filadora, Chief Physician Executive for Catholic Health. “By thoughtfully managing our available supply of iodinated contrast, we can continue to prioritize patients with the most urgent needs and ensure timely imaging, diagnosis, and treatment.”

Iodinated contrast is used in many diagnostic and interventional X-ray procedures—including CT scans—to help physicians better visualize certain organs, blood vessels, and tissues. The current supply constraint follows a manufacturer recall earlier this year that affected available inventory and slowed regular distribution to healthcare providers across the country. “While the manufacturer expects the situation to improve in the coming weeks, we are taking a cautious and responsible approach as supply levels continue to fluctuate,” Dr. Filadora said. “We will continue to monitor the situation closely and make decisions that put our patients first.”

Patients with questions about an upcoming imaging appointment should contact Catholic Health’s Patient Engagement Center at (716) 314-8504.
