Beyond getting approved by a bariatric surgeon for a weight loss procedure, patients will have a checklist of requirements to meet before the date of their surgery. These requirements are set for a number of reasons.
First and foremost, bariatric surgery is more than a simple change being made to your body and its metabolism. There are both physical and mental components to your weight loss journey. A bariatric surgery checklist is meant to ensure that a patient feels supported by the appropriate providers and specialists.
Here is an example of what our pre-surgery checklist looks like:
To give potential patients an overview of obesity as a medical condition and how surgeons understand the benefits of weight loss surgery.
A patient portal that asks the individual to fill out relevant medical information.
The first meeting with a bariatric surgeon, in which the patient is approved for surgery and a specific procedure is decided upon.
Appointments scheduled to see how a patient’s weight may be affecting other health issues… could include blood tests, a sleep study, an endoscopy, etc.
Required meetings with a registered dietitian and physical therapist; psych evaluation with a licensed clinical social worker.
In the two weeks leading up to surgery, patients adopt a liver reduction diet, a restrictive way of eating that encourages the body to reduce its sugar and fat stores.
Most insurance companies will have additional requirements for patients to meet in order to receive coverage for their procedure. Doctors’ offices often incorporate these common insurance requirements into their pre-surgery checklist, making it more convenient for the patient.
