Program Requirements
Prerequisites
A prospective intern/resident student must…
- demonstrate familiarity with and integration of their own story
- be able to give and receive feedback; personally and professionally
- be able to reflect theologically/abstractly on situations
- be able to think critically about both sides of an issue/situation
- serve in a setting with a plurality of religions and viewpoints
- type fluently for assignments and documentation in the record
A prospective intern/resident student should also have…
- significant academic preparation
- investment in a spiritual/theological/religious heritage and community
- a track-record in some area of healthcare or related helping profession
- a trajectory towards ministry
An ACPE Certified Educator Candidate should have…
- a graduate theological degree
- ordination or commissioning as a spiritual care provider by their religious/spiritual authority
- completion of four units of CPE
- demonstration of competence at ACPE Level 2b
- five years of chaplain experience
Time Commitment:
- A minimum 400 hours of combined clinical work and class-work per unit
- 1hr./wk. physical exertion via our hospital gym
- 1hr./wk. spiritual practice via our sacred spaces
- Potential hosting/attending of one another’s services/ceremonies on agreed upon weekends
- Occasional on-call from home (30 minute mandatory response time)
- Occasional weekend shift
- Normal 8-4 and occasional 1-9 shift
- Weekly reflections, essays, verbatims (case study), mid-unit and final self-evaluation homework sometimes completed outside of program hours
Learning Units
One unit of CPE is equal to a minimum of 400 hours.
Several part-time CPE unit opportunities are available during the year.
Residency Programs extend for one year from January – January.

Certification as a Chaplain requires 4 units of CPE, a Masters Degree in Theological Studies and meeting with one of the national committees:
- The National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC)
- The Association of Professional Chaplains (APC)
- The Canadian Association for Pastoral Practice and Education (CAPPE)
- The National Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC)
