Vascular Services

The vascular system is made up of the vessels that carry our blood: arteries and veins. Anyone, at any age, can experience a circulatory or vascular problem. Most often, it is the elderly who seem to fall victim to blood flow problems or vascular disease.

Catholic Health is the region’s leader in vascular care, performing more than 52% of all procedures in the Buffalo region. For more than 40 years, our vascular surgeons have provided a full range of services for those suffering from:

  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms
  • Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms
  • Carotid Artery Disease
  • Peripheral Arterial Disease
  • Peripheral Venous Disease (including Varicose Veins)
  • Vascular Access Complications

We are proud to offer traditional surgery as well as state-of-the-art, minimally invasive, endovascular procedures that mean shorter stays and quicker recoveries.

In fact, we were the first in Western New York to use a minimally invasive approach for Endovascular Repair of the Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm.

Early Detection of Vascular Disease

We emphasize early detection of vascular disease, which can reduce the risk of serious complications. Our non-invasive vascular laboratory performs testing for the detection of vascular disease of the carotid arteries, aorta and lower extremities.

Ultrasounds to Detect Vascular Disease

Our ultrasound services include:

  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
  • Peripheral Arterial Doppler
  • Peripheral Arterial Duplex (Bypass Graft Scan/Peripheral Aneurysm)
  • Carotid Doppler
  • Peripheral Venous Examination

Treatment of Vascular Disease

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

Catholic Health surgeons perform more than 60% of all AAA repairs in Erie County. Our experience places our physicians in the top 3% nationally.

Catholic Health’s vascular team has a proven track record of success in treating ruptured AAAs. Catholic Health procedures include:

  • endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm (EVAR – a minimally invasive approach)
  • open repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm
  • abdominal aortic aneurysm repair with fenestrated graft (a minimally invasive approach)

Carotid Artery Disease

Carotid artery stenosis is responsible for one-third of all strokes.

Procedures available in Catholic Health to treat carotid artery disease include:

  • carotid endarterectomy
  • carotid stent

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)

For patients suffering from PAD, Catholic Health offers:

  • minimally invasive repair with angioplasty and stent
  • peripheral bypass surgery
  • limb salvage

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI)

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a condition in which a blood clot (thrombus) forms in one of the deep veins in the body, usually in the lower extremities.

Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) is a progressive medical condition in which the valves that carry blood from the legs toward the heart no longer function, causing blood to pool in the legs (venous hypertension).

Catholic Health procedures include:

  • treatment for varicose veins (including the VNUS closure procedure)
  • DVT and post-phlebitic syndrome
  • venous stasis ulcers
