Almost everyone has experienced a headache in their lifetime, and they can range in severity from mild to debilitating. Treatment may depend on whether you are having a primary headache or a secondary headache.
A primary headache is a headache that is not caused by an underlying condition, like migraines or tension headaches. Secondary headaches are caused by other conditions, such as dehydration, a sinus infection, or a brain injury.
To determine the best course of treatment, you need to identify the cause of your headache. If your headache is a secondary headache that is being caused by dehydration or illness, drinking more fluids, resting, and taking antibiotics for your infection can help. With secondary headaches, treating the condition that is causing your headache will help relieve you of your headache symptoms.
In the case of a primary headache, many of them can be effectively treated at home with an over-the-counter pain reliever. However, primary headaches such as migraines can be a lot tougher to get rid of. Migraines are more common in women than men and are usually brought on by triggers such as changes in weather, stress, alcohol consumption, or poor diet.
Try one of the following methods to relieve primary headaches at home:
“A lot of reasons for seeking medical attention when the patient is having headaches is because of change, they are becoming more frequent or worse. Even if you have occasional headaches, if they start to bother you at work or school or your performance, that’s the time to seek medical attention. If you have chronic headaches but the treatment is no longer working, take over-the-counter medicine for example, you would need to ask a doctor to prescribe medication. That’s when you seek medical attention.”
