The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of four major ligaments that surround the knee joint, keeping it in place when the leg is bent or straight.
The ACL may be torn or injured in a variety of ways:
Men and women alike can suffer from sports related injuries like ACL tears but ACL tears are more likely to occur in women, who are less likely to bend their knees when landing from a jump and who are in a more erect position when turning and pivoting.
For more information about ACL injuries, visit our Health Library.
Each year in the United States, 1 in 100 female athletes will suffer a serious knee injury. You can prevent the likelihood of injury through the Sportsmetrics™ ACL Prevention Program, provided by AthletiCare. During this program, jumping drills are used to teach the athlete to preposition the entire body safely when accelerating (jumping) or decelerating (landing).
The program is four to six-weeks long.
In addition to prevention, the ACL program can assist athletes with a serious knee injury who are preparing to return to play. Under the supervision of an athletic trainer, you will learn the fundamentals of Sportsmetrics™ in a clinic setting and then train at home over a six week period.
