Bariatric surgery can be the best option for people who are severely obese and have not had success losing weight by traditional means. They often suffer serious, obesity-related health problems that could be life threatening without further intervention.
You may be a candidate for bariatric surgery if you meet these criteria:
Body Mass Index (BMI) of at least 40
BMI greater than 35 with the presence of obesity-associated illnesses or obesity-induced physical problems that interfere with daily living
18-60 years old
Possess an understanding of the surgical procedure, its associated health risks, and the lifestyle changes that must accompany it for success
Derive greater potential benefits than surgical risks
Stable psychological condition
Tobacco-free for at least 8 weeks prior to surgery

Program Requirements
To be considered for the Catholic Health Bariatric Surgery program, you must:
Participate in a pre-procedural online seminar
Undergo an assessment of health and risk
Have a letter indicating medical necessity
Have proof that past dieting did not work
Undergo a psychological evaluation
Participate in a registered dietician's assessment and program
Request insurance coverage
Undergo other tests as needed
Demonstrate your understanding of the choices, risks, and lifestyle changes required to achieve success
