Preparing for the birth of your baby is a busy, exciting time for you and your family.
The Special BirthPlace at Sisters Hospital and the Family BirthPlace at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo provide the knowledge you need to make this wonderful time in your life as easy, happy and memorable as possible.

No refunds are issued for cancellations made later than two weeks before the course.

Perfect for the first time mom, classes cover relaxation and breathing techniques, role of the labor companion, nutrition during pregnancy, physical and emotional changes of pregnancy, and signs and stages of labor. Also discussed are comfort measures during labor, variations of normal labor, Cesarean delivery, medications and anesthesia, and newborn care and feeding.
Classes are conducted by registered nurses who specialize in obstetrics and childbirth education. Includes Maternity Department tour.

Fee is $45 per couple. Independent Health members need only meet a $15 co-payment.*

Five-session classes (7 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.)

Maternity tours of the birthplace at Sisters Hospital are included for attendees at our St. Joseph Campus classes. You may schedule the date and time of your tour during class.
Weekend classes are intense, abbreviated single-day sessions with limited practice of relaxation techniques. Please bring two pillows and a blanket.

For the family who has been down this road before, we offer a refresher class to re-familiarize you with what to expect during and after pregnancy, and during labor. Please bring a blanket and two pillows.

Fee is $15 per couple.*
7 p.m. - 10 p.m.
Under the guidance of an experienced, internationally board certified Lactation Consultant, the class will help answer common questions and concerns many new families experience during pregnancy. We will prepare the new family for both the initial breastfeeding experience and what to expect during the first few weeks at home.

3rd Floor, Department of Medicine Conference Room
Fee is $10*
Wednesdays, 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.

Thursdays, 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.
For parents expecting multiple births, this class covers fetal development, types of twins, special needs of twin pregnancy, vaginal/Cesarean section delivery, breastfeeding twins, bonding with two infants, and more.

Saturday, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.
This informal class provides a foundation to the new parenting role. Discussion concerns decisions to be made prior to the baby’s birth, such as breastfeeding vs. bottle feeding, male circumcision, and selecting a pediatrician. Common newborn concerns such as bathing, umbilical cord care, temperature taking and jaundice are also discussed.

Saturday, 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
A delightful presentation offered to pre-school and young school age children to introduce them to the exciting role of being a big brother or sister and to help them feel involved. Parents accompany the sibling on a guided tour of the maternity unit as they view Mom’s room and see new babies through the nursery window. Children also learn, with the help of a doll, about holding, feeding and bathing a newborn.

Using a medically proven, safe, and effective alternative for family planning based on the Creighton Model FertilityCare System, couples are taught how to monitor the woman’s fertility cycle and use this knowledge to either achieve or avoid a pregnancy as the couple desires.
Tours of the Special BirthPlace at Sisters Hospital and the Family BirthPlace at Mercy Hospital should be arranged several weeks in advance of your due date.
If you are attending one of our Prepared Childbirth classes, you do not need to arrange a tour of the maternity department, as it is included as part of the program.
