Kim Hazard Gives Birth on October 10, 2010 at 10:10 a.m.

Kim Hazard of Derby, NY was ready to give birth to her fourth child. Her physician, Douglas Hage, MD, originally scheduled her for a cesarean section at Mercy Hospital on October 12.

Kim Hazard and Karsen HazardThen Hazard and her husband, Alan, began to wonder whether it would be possible to have the baby on 10-10-10, making it a special birthdate like their oldest child, Gretchen, born naturally on 2-20-02. She felt it couldn’t hurt to ask. Dr. Hage said, “Sure!” and that he would try his best to accommodate her.

Since Dr. Hage normally schedules C-section patients for Tuesdays and Fridays, he needed to gather his team for Sunday, October 10 and spoke with anesthesiologist Salvatore Parlato, III, MD who agreed to help him.

“That morning, the nurses placed her in room 10 in Labor and Delivery,” Dr. Hage said. “We said if it works out with safety as priority, we would go for 10:10 a.m. too.”

Karsen Hazard entered the world at 10:10 a.m. on 10-10-10. Hazard said the baby’s pediatrician, Gail Goodman, MD, described Karsen as “a perfect 10” when she came to see him. WGRZ-TV News also featured the story in its evening newscast.

And, how would Kim Hazard rate her experience at Mercy? “That would be a ‘10’ also,” she replied. “It was my third time having a baby here, and I would recommend this hospital to anybody.”

“It turned out that everything went smoothly,” Dr. Hage continued. “It’s such a happy occasion, and we were so glad we could fulfill her wishes.”
