Expressly for Women

At the Catholic Health System, we know that today’s woman is interested in learning more about her body and her health. She wants, and needs, to become an active participant in her health care with a partner who understands the unique needs and challenges she faces each day.

For women in Western New York, one of their most trusted partners is Expressly for Women, the comprehensive women’s services network of the Catholic Health System.

Established in 1988, Expressly for Women offers a full-range of programs and services for women of all ages. Since its early beginnings, Expressly for Women has grown tremendously to become a valuable network of medical, educational, and wellness programs. It is Western New York’s leading health and wellness resource and referral service for women.

As the health and wellness needs of women continue to evolve, so too will Expressly for Women, as part of our organization’s commitment and historic tradition of caring for you – mind, body and spirit.

Maternity Services

The dedicated professionals at Mercy Hospital’s Family BirthPlace and Sisters Hospital’s Special BirthPlace understand the joys and challenges of childbirth. They’ll be with you throughout your labor and delivery to offer support and encouragement, as well as provide any assistance you may need during your stay.

As the leader in maternity services in Western New York, our first priority is the care of you and your baby. We are committed to providing high quality, compassionate care in a comfortable, safe atmosphere. This personal approach and genuine love for what we do makes Mercy Hospital’s Family BirthPlace and Sisters Hospital’s Special BirthPlace the setting more families are choosing to deliver their babies.

Other maternity services offered by the Catholic Health System include:

  • FREE and confidential pregnancy testing and HIV counseling and testing.
  • Antepartum Fetal Evaluation Unit providing prenatal/genetic testing, including ultrasound and consultation.

Childbirth Education Classes

Preparing for the birth of your baby is a busy, exciting time for you and your family. The Special BirthPlace at Sisters of Charity Hospital and the Family BirthPlace at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo provide the knowledge you need to make this wonderful time in your life as easy, happy, and memorable as possible. Classes offer parent education and support including classes in such areas as childbirth education, breastfeeding, twinformation, infant massage, baby talk, infant/child CPR, and a class for siblings.

Gynecology

  • OB/GYN primary and specialty care services
  • Menopause treatment, education, and support
  • Mammography services
  • Ultrasound services

Gynecologic Oncology

Our staff includes specialists in the treatment of ovarian and other gynecologic cancers. Patients are provided comprehensive services for all gynecologic malignancies throughout the Catholic Health System. Services provided include evaluation, diagnostic surgery, inpatient and outpatient chemotherapy and radiation treatment, if indicated. In addition, Sisters of Charity Hospital is certified by the American College of Surgeons as a Community Cancer Center.

Maternal/Child Home Care

In-home nursing assistance for ante-partum, post-partum and newborn patients, including specialized therapies, evaluations, education and assessment of such conditions as gestational diabetes and pregnancy-induced hypertension.

Pediatrics and Adolescence

  • Pediatric and adolescent primary care services
  • Inpatient pediatric surgery
  • Adolescent eating disorders
  • Health and fitness programs

Incontinence

  • Urodynamic testing for the evaluation and diagnosis of urinary incontinence as well as various surgical and non-surgical treatments.
  • Physical therapy treatments aimed at managing pelvic pain and incontinence include biofeedback, muscle re-education, ultrasound and myofascial release/craniosacral therapy. The mysofascial system surrounds all organs, muscles, nerves, and blood vessels in the body. Trauma, inflammation, surgical scars, and childbirth may tighten this myofascial system and thus put pressure on pain-sensitive structures. This restriction can cause or contribute to many health issues. Besides general techniques, there are specific ones helpful in decreasing restrictions in the pelvic and abdominal areas thus freeing compressed tissue and restoring more normal function. For more information, see Pelvic Pain and Incontinence under Rehabilitation-Specialty Services.

Health Education and Wellness

  • Comprehensive and informative education programs and screenings to improve the health and fitness of women and the community in general through HealthConnection and Expressly for Women.
  • Bone densitometry testing for risk assessment and detection of osteoporosis.
  • Osteoporosis support groups, speakers’ bureau and valuable health and wellness information through the WNY/Rochester Regional Osteoporosis Resource Center.
  • Support groups for many women’s health issues including breast cancer, diabetes, and more.
