The Heart Center is designed to provide the best possible medical treatment for patients with state-of-the-art facilities and a seamless delivery of care - from pre-admission testing, to treatment, to care after discharge - all within the Catholic Health System. Mercy Hospital’s Echocardiography Lab received Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL) accreditation for adult transthoracic and adult transesophageal cardiography from this national organization.
Family BirthPlace
For those women looking for more options and personalized service, the Family BirthPlace is a memorable setting to welcome your baby into the world. Patient rooms feature many special touches to help make your stay as comfortable as possible. Birthing rooms, featuring all the comforts and conveniences of home, are fully equipped for labor, delivery, and recovery. Several even offer Jacuzzi whirlpool tubs, giving moms a higher level of relaxation before delivery. Speciality suites, available for an additional charge, provide a unique level of comfort and privacy for families to enjoy those precious first days following baby’s birth. Speciality suites feature elegant furnishings, a separate seating area for families and friends to visit, as well as a comfortable spot for your birthing partner to stretch out and relax. Other features include:
- A centrally located nurses’ station that places your health care team closer to you and your baby.
- A gourmet dining room to enjoy a sumptuous celebration feast in baby’s honor.
- A comfortable and elegant visitor lobby.
- A sibling visitation room.
- An intensive care nursery family visiting room.
- The latest in security technology.
- The unit also features a full-term nursery and a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Both are equipped with state-of-the-art technology to help your health care team provide exceptional care for your baby.

Mother-baby nursing is an integral component of the Family BirthPlace experience. As part of this program, a registered nurse dedicated to caring for you and your baby will help your new family embark on what will be a memorable life-long journey. Our specialized nurses help you learn how to care for yourself and your baby. Because this nurse coordinates your care as well as your baby’s, she can explain infant care techniques and point out different aspects of infant behavior right from the start. More importantly, she is there to address your health care needs, alleviate your concerns, and offer valuable encouragement and support.

Pediatric Care Unit
Our pediatric care unit is located on the fourth floor, adjacent to the Family BirthPlace. The 8-bed pediatric unit provides care for medical and surgical patients from infancy to 18 years old in a family-focused, family-friendly atmosphere. The Pediatric Unit features 12 beds. Every effort is made to accommodate parents in rooms as well, so they can comfortably stay right by their child's side - day or night. Children without contagious diseases can enjoy a special playroom filled with toys, books, both a VCR and DVD player with videos, and a video game system.
Children are special patients. For them, a few hours in a hospital bed can seem like days. At Mercy Hospital, we know that nothing is more important than restoring your child's health and well-being. That is why we created a dedicated Pediatric Department with a special hospital wing to care for children from birth up to age 17. Patients are referred to this unit by community physicians. In addition, this unit serves as the primary hospital care provider for patients of the Mercy Pediatric Center, located next to the hospital parking ramp in the Marian Professional Center.
Mercy's Pediatric Department is comprised of a team of highly skilled and experienced professionals, dedicated to providing advanced, individualized family-centered care for your child, including:
- Board-certified and/or board-eligible pediatricians who are available in the hospital (24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week).
- Sub-specialty physicians in such areas as allergy, cardiology, dermatology, diabetes and endocrinology, ENT surgery, gastroenterology, general surgery, adolescent neurology, orthopedics, and rheumatology.
- Specially-trained pediatric nurses who are assisted by a skilled and dedicated ancillary staff of technicians, registered dietitians (who are experienced at working with the special needs of overweight children and nutritional needs while in the hospital), clinical social workers, and pastoral care/spiritual care specialists.
Mercy Hospital is also a teaching hospital, so you can be assured that our clinicians are at the forefront of advanced medicine and technology to care for your child. Residents from pediatrics and family medicine help provide high-quality care for your child both at Mercy Hospital and at the Mercy Pediatric Center.
The hospital's Emergency Room (ER) staff also places a high priority on pediatric patients. In the ER, children are seen as quickly as possible. Those needing private care may be transported to the Pediatric Wing in a private elevator that goes directly from the ER to the Pediatric Wing.
Our priority is to ensure that your child receives the right level of care at the right time. Mercy Hospital also has a transfer agreement with Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo for those children whose needs require intensive or specialized treatment that cannot be provided at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo.

Our full service imaging services department offers diagnostic testing at Mercy Hospital and various locations throughout the Southtowns. Our experienced staff offers superior service using state-of-the-art equipment providing
such testing as 64-slice CT and CTA, MRI, ultrasound, EKG, nuclear medicine, non-invasive vascular ultrasound,
radiology, and interventional radiology. In addition, the Mercy Hospital Radiology Department recently received
accreditation from the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL). Participation in the accreditation process demonstrates Radiology’s ongoing concern for high quality patient care and attention to quality assurance. The ICAVL has the support of ten medical societies representing the medical specialties of radiology, ultrasonography, vascular surgery, neurology, cardiology, neurosurgery and internal medicine.
Mercy Hospital was the first to bring the technology of the SOMATOM Sensation 64-Slice CT Scanner to Western New York. This breakthrough technology, made possible by Catholic Health System's strategic partnership with Siemens Medical, has had a significant impact on our physicians' ability to diagnose cardiovascular disease by providing detailed images of the heart and arteries quickly and non-invasively. daVinci® Robotic Surgery
The da Vinci ® Surgical System is powered by state-of-the-art robotic technology. The System allows your surgeon’s hand movements to be scaled, filtered, and translated into precise movements of micro-instruments within the operative site. The magnified, three-dimensional view the surgeon experiences enables him to perform precise surgery in complex procedures through small surgical incisions.

The da Vinci ® System enhances surgical capabilities by enabling the performance of complex surgeries through tiny surgical openings. The System cannot be programmed nor can it make decisions on its own. The da Vinci ® System requires that every surgical mauveuver be performed with direct input from your surgeon.
The da Vinci® Surgical System has been successfully used in thousands of prostate cancer procedures world-wide.
For additional information on the da Vinci® Surgical System visit www.davinciprostatectomy.com.
Download a brochure on the daVinci® Surgical System.
For many patients approaching surgery, it is often difficult to visualize what is entailed in a specific surgical procedure. To give prospective da Vinci ® Prostatectomy patients a better understanding of the advances made by robotically-assisted minimally invasive surgery, we present the following video presentation. This video offers a three-dimensional simulation of the male reproductive anatomy, the enabling technology—the da Vinci ® Surgical System—and the procedure itself.
