In 2006, the Lucia Dika Scholarship fund was established in memory of Lucia, a former resident of St. Catherine Laboure, by her daughter Vera and son-in-law Henry. The scholarship supports nurses engaged in educational advancements while employed by Catholic Health and caring for geriatric patients at the ministry’s Continuing Care Division long-term care facilities.
Annually Catholic Health nurses have been awarded scholarships in memory of Lucia Dika to advance their education and the level of care our residents receive at our long term care facilities, like Our Lady of Victory. Our Foundation Board of Directors and I collaborate with leadership from the Continuing Care ministry to identify award candidates. Once awarded, the funds are paid directly to the educational institution to support the awardee’s endeavors.
In 2013 & 2014, Jessica Sylvia, RN, CNM, was awarded the scholarship funds to support her dream to achieve her Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) at Trocaire College. She currently works at St. Catherine Laboure in Buffalo and is expected to graduate in May 2016.
