Nurses of the Year

Each year, Sisters of Charity Hospital, St. Joseph Campus recognizes two outstanding nurses.

In 2013, Celeste Jakubowski, RN, BSN, CNML, in Hall 4 TCAB unit was chosen as the Nurse of Distinction. Nicole Piasecki, RN in Hall 4 North was chosen as Oustanding Staff Nurse.

LOVE Award Winners

The staff members below have been awarded the LOVE Award, a quarterly designation that recognizes St. Joseph Campus associates who demonstrate a personal commitment to our values in their daily work.

Anyone can nominate an associate for the LOVE award – patients, visitors, family members, physicians, volunteers and co-workers.

Meet our most recent award-winners below:

Kristen Gill

2012 – Fourth Quarter Winner

Kristen is a dietitian in the Food & Nutrition Department and has been an associate at St. Joseph Campus since November 2011.

Kristen has many qualities that meet or exceed our values. She was nominated by a co-worker who said, "Kristen is a kind and compassionate woman."

"She works with the CHF team to provide information and empowering patients to better understand and control their disease. Kristen has taken on this endeavor with a passion. She educates all patients as if they were her own family. She takes extra time and effort with her patients as most are elderly. She understands their physical, mental and monetary concerns and offers alternatives when available."

Tara Edgerton

2012 – Third Quarter Winner

A Unit Clerk on 5 North, Tara has been an associate at St. Joseph Campus since 2006 and is being recognized  for her dedication.

She was nominated by her Nurse Manager who said, "Tara is truly my right and left arm. She keeps me organized as well as the unit. She takes pride in her work each day and has earned the respect of her peers and our physicians."

"She is a dedicated associate who does not let personal setbacks interfere with her work. Everyone who approaches the unit is greeted by Tara, who is always ready to be of assistance. Tara is a team player who will pitch in with the nurse assistants when short-staffed or busy."

Joe Kraft

2012 – Second Quarter Winner

Receiving Clerk Joe Kraft has been a St. Joseph Campus associate since 1981.

Joe was nominated by his peers, who said it’s easy to nominate someone visible, but for more than 30 years, Joe has been behind the scenes. Joe shows his dedication on a daily basis – he goes above and beyond the call of duty helping others in his daily travels, offering his assistance of just a friendly greeting.

Joe shows respect, acceptance of everyone, and personal and professional integrity. 

Joan Krzeminski

2012 – Second Quarter Winner

Food Service Attendant Joan Krzeminski has been a St. Joseph Campus associate since 2005.

Joan was nominated for the LOVE Award by a co-worker who said:

“Joan exhibits all the eligibility criteria for this award. She is a true example of reverence, compassion, justice and excellence. Joan not only listens with her ears, but with her heart. Her drive to help the poor and disadvantaged goes well beyond the call of duty."

"For example, Joan was on her lunch break and noticed a blind man and his dog enter the café. Without hesitation, she helped seat him, got him coffee and food and set everything up for him. She is forever stopping whatever she is doing to help people out. Anyone who knows Joan knows how caring and thoughtful she is.”

Bonnie Jenkins

2012 – First Quarter Winner

Bonnie Jenkins is a Nursing Assistant on Hall 4 and has worked at St. Joseph Campus since 2009, when she transitioned from the St. Francis of Buffalo nursing home after the facility closed in 2009.

Bonnie was nominated by her manager who described her as “a calm presence in the intense storm.” This is the phrase that the entire staff uses in describing Bonnie. She is dedicated to her patients and goes beyond for all.

In December 2011, she was the most recognized staff member on Hall 4. She received special mention from 8 patients that she cared for! Her presence is an asset to Hall 4 in all ways.

Noel Dela Cruz

2011 – Fourth Quarter Winner

An associate in the laboratory since 2008, Noel Dela Cruz received the LOVE Award in the fourth quarter. He was nominated by his manager.

He has received many accolades as a result of his happy, uplifting personality. His co-workers like working with him because he always has a smile, treats them with respect and is concerned with their well being. Nurses say that patients appreciate Noel because of his sensitive, caring manner, which he displays with a bright smile.

A physician (Dr. Botsoglou) recently commented, “Noel is a keeper. He makes my patients laugh. You don’t ever want to lose him!”

Noel gets great praise for his work ethics, getting along with everyone and brightening his fellow workers' day.

Derrick Esford

2011 – Third Quarter Winner

Derrick was nominated for LOVE Award by Robin Fitzsimmons, Manager of the St. Joseph Campus Emergency Department. She said:

"Derrick passes trays and takes diet orders from patients. Throughout his encounter with patients and families, he greets them with a smile, listens attentively and assists patients in preparing for their meals. Derrick always makes eye contact with everyone, takes a moment to greet others with a 'hello' and acknowledges their presence."

"Derrick is accommodating to everyone's requests. He is dedicated to his job responsibilities and makes sure that he performs his tasks to the best of his ability. Patients are please with Derrick's effort and comment about what a great job he does." 

Brandon Schultz

2011 – Second Quarter Winner

Brandon Schultz, a Nurses Aide on Hall 2 since August 2010, was nominated for the LOVE Award by the family of a patient who had passed away.

The nomination stated: “Mr. Schultz was so caring in the last hours of my mother’s life. He was always coming in to make sure we were okay and to ask if we needed anything. Just after my mom’s passing, Mr. Schultz stood with us and said a few prayers. He extended his sympathy to each and every one of us who was there, some that he had not even seen before."

"I have run across many people in the medical field who are just in it for a paycheck, and could not even be bothered to do or say the things he did. Please tell him that each member of our family says thank you. His extreme thoughtfulness will not be forgotten.”

John Felix

2011 – Second Quarter Winner

John Felix is a Registered Nurse in the emergency department and has been employed at St. Joseph Campus since 2003.

John's manager nominated him for the award, on behalf of a patient's wife, who stated:

“John was beyond amazing! He went above and beyond to ensure that my husband was taken care of. He checked that my husband was comfortable and stopped in frequently and made sure he was doing well. John was comforting to my daughter. He saw she was crying and offered words of comfort and gave her tissues. Before John was done with his shift, he let us know that he was leaving and told us who would be taking over. I am very grateful to John for making our stay in the hospital a good experience.”

His manager said, “The behavior demonstrated by John is an everyday occurrence. John is a true model of living our values effectively!”

Donna Mohring

2011 – First Quarter Winner

Registered Nurse Donna Mohring has been employed at St. Joseph Campus for over 30 years. She was nominated for the LOVE Award by her co-workers, who said that Donna is a patient advocate who always lends an ear to families in need, "oftentimes consoling family members of patients that have passed on."

The nomination also stated that Donna has earned the trust and respect of the physicians who entrust her to care for their patients and is always willing to lend a helping hand to her co-workers.

Michael George

2010 – Fourth Quarter Winner

Physical Therapist Michael George received the LOVE Award in the fourth quarter. He was nominated by a patient, who wrote:

"Right from my first visit with Michael, he has been nothing but professional and extremely helpful. He is never too busy to take the time to answer my questions and explain what procedures he is doing."

"He allows my daughters to make very early appointments so that my daughter can bring me in before work. One morning, he met us at the door with a wheelchair and helped transport me into rehab."

"A few words that define Michael are: professional, patient, loving, kind, caring, understanding, and above all hard working! Not only has Michael given me 110%, but he treats all of his patients with utmost care and professionalism. I consider Michael my angel that was sent to heal me.”

Holly Narchus

2010 – Fourth Quarter Winner

Registered Nurse Holly Narchus received the LOVE Award in the fourth quarter. She was nominated for going above and beyond for her patients, her co-workers and for those in need.

Her nomination stated that she cares deeply about her patients and will stay with them for as much time as necessary to make them more comfortable. 

For her co-workers, she is the "go to" person for Hall 4. She is responsible for the planning and implementation of all recognition of Hall 4 staff. She often comes in on a day off to coordinate and carry out the celebrations.

Also, during each holiday season, she creates and donates a Christmas wreath. If Thanksgiving baskets are lacking, Holly brings in food quietly and without recognition. These baskets are distributed to needy families throughout the community.

Ellen May

2010 – Third Quarter Winner

Ellen May received the LOVE Award in the third quarter. Ellen is the admissions receptionist in the Emergency Department on the night shift and was nominated for her compassion.

A patient was discharged in the early morning hours from the Emergency Department and did not have any warm clothing for the trip home. Ellen, who lives near the hospital, called her home to have a sweater delivered, which she gave to the patient.

Ellen's nomination said, "Ellen’s compassion should be an example to all of us." 

Carol Szyklinski

2010 – Second Quarter Winner

Carol, an R.N. in the Emergency Department, received the LOVE Award in the second quarter. She was nominated by her manager.

"Carol has many qualities that meet or exceed the Catholic Health core values. She treats every customer, patient, peer or physician with the respect they deserve. Carol makes it her business as charge nurse to meet every patient during her shift. She listens with empathy to the patient and/or family member to alleviate their fears or concerns. She always helps in a sensitive but calm disposition that demonstrates to the patient a safe and welcoming environment. Carol is committed to excellence in her job duties and daily tasks. She is a mentor and coach to her peers and always leads by example."

Mary Anne Musielak

2010 – First Quarter Winner

Mary Anne Musielak, a Registered Nurse at Sisters of Charity Hospital, St. Joseph Campus received the LOVE Award in the first quarter. She has been employed at St. Joseph Campus for over 30 years in various nursing capacities – RN 5N, Assistant Head Nurse 5N, Patient Care Coordinator 5N, Nurse Manager 5N, Surgery RN, and RN Float.

She was recognized for her dedication to St. Joseph Campus. An observer states that Mary Anne always has a positive attitude, can assume any position without difficulty, such as Charge Nurse or Team Leader, and is a patient advocate, enforcing standards for excellence in nursing. Mary Anne is also considerate, patient and sympathetic and is supportive to both staff and family.
