HANYS’ Pinnacle Award for Quality and Patient Safety (2011)

Mercy Hospital has been awarded the 2011 Pinnacle Award for Quality and Patient Safety by the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS).

The award, which was presented during the recent HANYS Annual Membership Conference, recognizes quality improvement and patient safety. Mercy was one of three hospitals statewide selected for the honor.

SDI Top 100 Integrated Health Systems

Top 100 Integrated Health Systems - Catholic Health (2008 - 2012)

This award encompasses the entire Catholic Health system and indicates that we are one of the 100 most integrated networks nationwide. Catholic Health ranked 42nd in the 2012 survey; no other healthcare system in Western New York ranked in the top 50.

Joint Commission Accreditation

Joint Commission accreditation is a voluntary process consisting of rigorous, unannounced site surveys by a team of physicians, nurses and other health executives. Commission accredited or certified organizations have demonstrated that they meet the highest standards in their field. American Heart Association - Mission: Lifeline Bronze Quality Achievement Award (2011)

Mercy Hospital has been awarded the Mission: Lifeline Bronze Quality Achievement Award by the American Heart Association. The Award recognizes the hospital’s STEMI Receiving Center in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients that effectively improves the survival and care of STEMI (ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction) patients. The Bronze level signifies that Mercy has reached an aggressive goal of treating heart attack patients with 85 percent compliance for 90 consecutive days.

New York State Department of Health - Interventional Cardiology Program Ranked Best in State (2010)

Catholic Health’s Heart Center at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo leads the region in safe outcomes for interventional cardiology procedures, including angioplasty and stent placement, according to a report by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH).

Independent Health - Program of Excellence for PCI (since 2009)

The Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) program at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo has been named a “Program of Excellence” by Independent Health. PCI is also known as angioplasty.

The program earned its designation based on Independent Health’s review of clinical and quality data, which references New York state and national benchmarks, as well as American College of Cardiology standards of care. The Heart Center exceeded many quality indicators, including the most current New York State PCI mortality data.

Quality Achievement Award for Heart Attack Care - American Heart Association (2011)

The American Heart Association awarded Mercy Hospital the Mission Lifeline Bronze Quality Achievement Award for STEMI heart attack, recognizing the hospital for achieving an 85% or higher compliance to the AHA standard of care guidelines for 90 consecutive days.

Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) - Two-Star National Quality Rating for The Heart Center at Mercy (2011-2012)

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) has awarded Mercy Hospital's heart surgery program a two-star national quality rating for the year of 2012.

Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) - Three-Star National Quality Rating for The Heart Center at Mercy (2011-2012)

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) has awarded Mercy Hospital's heart surgery program a three-star national quality rating.

A “three-star” rating is the highest award under the STS quality rating system.

Blue Distinction Center for Cardiac Care (2009-2013)

Blue Distinction is a designation awarded by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies to medical facilities that have demonstrated expertise in delivering quality healthcare, under objective selection criteria.

The designation is based on rigorous, evidence-based selection criteria established by leading medical specialists and societies. Its goal is to help consumers find quality specialty care on a consistent basis, while enabling and encouraging health professionals to improve the overall quality and delivery of healthcare nationwide.

Get With The Guidelines® Stroke Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award (2013)

The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association have recognized Mercy Hospital for 85% or higher adherence to all Get With The Guidelines® Heart Failure Performance Achievement indicators for at least 12 consecutive months. The award also recognizes at least 12 consecutive months of 75% or higher compliance with 4 of 9 Get With The Guidelines Heart Failure Quality Measures to improve quality of patient care and outcomes.

MOREOB Recognition Award (2013)

Mercy Hospital’s Family BirthPlace, which includes Maternity and Labor & Delivery Services, earned the MOREOB Recognition Award for its outstanding performance in the application of knowledge, communication and teamwork to make quality care and patient safety a top priority.

Mercy was selected to be a demonstration site for MOREOB (Managing Obstetrical Risk Efficiently) in 2012, which is a national patient safety, professional development and performance improvement program offered by Salus Global Corporation.

Recognized as an industry leader in providing advanced stroke care, Mercy Hospital of Buffalo has been named a Comprehensive Stroke Center by The Joint Commission, the nation’s leading accrediting body for hospitals and health providers.

Offered in collaboration with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, this advanced certification recognizes an elite group of hospitals that have highly specialized staff, equipment and facilities to treat the most complex stroke cases.

Mercy Hospital is the only hospital in Western New York, and one of only two in New York State, to earn this special designation.

Designated Stroke Center

Designated Stroke Center by New York State Department of Health (since 2007)

Stroke Center Designation assures patients that Mercy Hospital meets the State’s stringent guidelines for stroke care. This includes being seen by a physician within 15 minutes of arrival in the ER; receiving a CT scan within 25 minutes; interpretation of CT results in 45 minutes; lab results in 45 minutes; and clot busting drugs within 60 minutes of arrival or 3 hours of symptom onset and catheter-based techniques than enable treatment up to 8 hours from symptom onset.

Get with the Guidelines - Stroke Plus

Get With The Guidelines® - Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award (2013)

Mercy Hospital of Buffalo received the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association Get with the Guidelines® Stroke Gold Plus & Target Stroke Honor Roll Award recognition for achieving 85% or higher adherence to all Stroke Achievement Indicators for two or more consecutive 12 month intervals.

The Plus achievement reflects at least 12 consecutive months of 75% or higher compliance with 5 or more Get With The Guidelines® Stroke Quality Measures to improve quality of patient care and outcomes.

Target Stroke Honor Roll is awarded for 12 consecutive months, at least 50% of the hospital’s eligible ischemic stroke patients have received tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, within 60 minutes of arriving at the hospital (known as ‘door-to-needle’ time). A thrombolytic, or clot-busting agent. TPA is the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the urgent treatment of ischemic stroke. If given intravenously in the first three hours after the start of stroke symptoms, tPA has been shown to significantly reverse the effects of stroke and reduce permanent disability.
