Overall Quality and Value

SDI Top 100 Integrated Health Systems - Catholic Health (2008 - 2010)

This award encompasses the entire Catholic Health system and indicates that we are one of the 100 most integrated networks out of more than 580 health systems that are graded on operations, quality, scope of services, and efficiency.

The designation is awareded by SDI, a nationally recognized healthcare data and consulting firm based in Yardley, Pennsylvania. 

Cleverley + Associates - Community Value Index® (CVI) Five-Star Hospital Award (2009 - 2010)

Cleverley + Associates of Columbus, Ohio, a leading healthcare financial consulting firm, has named Mercy Hospital as a five-star hospital, a national recognition for quality and value, for two consecutive years. The rating places Mercy Hospital in the top 20 percent of Cleverley’s annual nationwide evaluation of 2,643 hospitals in four key areas of performance including:

Joint Commission Accreditation (2009)

Joint Commission accreditation is a voluntary process consisting of rigorous, unannounced site surveys by a team of physicians, nurses and other health executives. Commission accredited or certified organizations have demonstrated that they meet the highest standards in their field. All Catholic Health hospitals have earned accreditation by The Joint Commission.

Cardiology

Independent Health - Program of Excellence for PCI (2009)

The Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) program at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo has been named a “Program of Excellence” by Independent Health. PCI is also known as angioplasty.

The program earned its designation based on Independent Health’s review of clinical and quality data, which references New York state and national benchmarks, as well as American College of Cardiology standards of care. The Heart Center exceeded many quality indicators, including the most current New York State PCI mortality data.

Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) - Three-Star National Quality Rating for The Heart Center at Mercy (2008 - 2009)

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) has awarded Mercy Hospital's heart surgery program a three-star national quality rating – the highest category of quality achieved under the STS quality rating system. Approximately 15% of the 900 participating hospitals across the country received a three-star rating for the period covering January 2008 to December 2008.

New York State Department of Health - Lowest Mortality Rate Among Western New York Hospitals for Angioplasty

According to New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) reports issued in July 2009, the Catholic Health Heart Center at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo had the lowest mortality rate among all hospitals in the Western New York (WNY) region, and among the lowest in New York State, for angioplasty.

The report examined outcomes of 167,752 patients undergoing angioplasty procedures conducted at 51 hospitals across New York State during the period 2004 through 2006.

Blue Distinction Center for Cardiac Care (2006)

Blue Distinction is a designation awarded by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies to medical facilities that have demonstrated expertise in delivering quality healthcare, under objective selection criteria. The designation is based on rigorous, evidence-based selection criteria established by leading medical specialists and societies. Its goal is to help consumers find quality specialty care on a consistent basis, while enabling and encouraging health professionals to improve the overall quality and delivery of healthcare nationwide.

Stroke

Designated Stroke Center by New York State Department of Health (2007)

Stroke Center Designation assures patients that Mercy Hospital meets the State’s stringent guidelines for stroke care. This includes being seen by a physician within 15 minutes of arrival in the ER; receiving a CT scan within 25 minutes; interpretation of CT results in 45 minutes; lab results in 45 minutes; and clot busting drugs within 60 minutes of arrival or 3 hours of symptom onset and catheter-based techniques than enable treatment up to 8 hours from symptom onset.

BlueCross and BlueShield Blue Distinction Center for Spine Surgery℠ and Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement.℠

Blue Distinction Centers for Spine Surgery℠ and Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement℠ provide a full range of orthopedic surgery care services, including inpatient care, post-operative care, outpatient follow-up care, and patient education.

Intensive Care

Thomson 100 Top Hospitals - Intensive Care Unit (2001)Thomson 100 Top Hospitals

In 2001, Mercy Hospital was named as one of America's 100 Top Hospitals - Intensive Care Units in an independent study. That study, "100 Top Hospitals: ICU Benchmarks for Success," performed by Thomson (formerly Solucient, and currently the nation’s leading healthcare ratings company), included data from 1,200 hospitals with ICU's.

Imaging/Diagnostics

American College of Radiology (ACR) - Three Year Accreditation for Computed Tomography (CT) (2009)

Mercy Hospital of Buffalo was awarded a three-year accreditation in computed tomography (CT) by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

ACR awards accreditation to facilities that meet high national standards for quality and service. To be considered for ACR accreditation, Mercy Hospital voluntarily submitted to a rigorous review of all aspects of its CT service.

American College of Radiology (ACR) - Three Year Accreditation for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) (2009)

The American College of Radiology (ACR) has awarded Mercy Hospital of Buffalo’s MRI Department with a three-year accreditation for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The ACR accreditation recognizes that the hospital’s MRI service has undergone a rigorous review process and meets nationally accepted standards of care.

Certification of Lab (Myocardial Perfusion Imaging and Nuclear Medicine) - ICANL (2008)

By demonstrating substantial compliance to the requirements outlined in the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Nuclear Medicine Laboratories, Mercy Hospital has demonstrated a commitment to high quality patient care.

Certification of Lab (Ultrasound) - ICAVL (2004)

The purpose of the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories is to provide a mechanism for accreditation of facilities which perform comprehensive testing for vascular disease with noninvasive testing modalities. Through the accreditation process, laboratories assess every aspect of daily operation and its impact on the quality of healthcare provided to patients.
