Medical Rehabilitation Unit

What is a Medical Rehabilitation Unit (MRU)?

A medical rehabilitation unit offers more aggressive treatment for patients who experience hip fractures, strokes or other neurological impairments. It provides a higher level of care than subacute (short-term) rehabilitation facilities.  On average, the length of stay in an MRU is 14 days.

Treatment Facilities

The mission of the Partners In Rehab Medical Rehabilitation Unit (MRU) at Mercy Hospital and Kenmore Mercy Hospital is to improve the health, functioning and quality of life of patients transitioning from an acute care facility.

MRU at Kenmore Mercy Hospital: Ranked Among Top 10% in Nation

The MRU at Kenmore Mercy Hospital has been recognized as one of the top inpatient rehabilitation facilities (IRF) in the United States. In May 2009, it was announced that the hospital’s MRU was ranked in the top 10 percent of 813 qualifying inpatient rehabilitation facilities (IRF) in the United States for 2008 by the Uniform Data System for Medical Rehabilitation (UDSMR).

Why Catholic Health?

Easy Access to Medical Services

With the MRU located within an acute care facility, patients benefit from the proximity to medical services should the need arise. The 20-bed unit at each facility promotes the independence of individuals through the compassionate delivery of the highest quality medical care.

Team Approach to Care

Each patient's rehabilitation program is developed by our medical team led by our board-certified physiatrist in conjunction with the patient and family and incorporates the patient's personal treatment goals.

Specialized teams of medical and clinical staff work exclusively in the MRU to expedite the recovery process. The physician's team includes:

  • Physical and occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists
  • Care managers/social workers
  • Rehabilitation nurses
  • Surgeons, internists and specialists (as needed)
  • Pastoral/spiritual care personnel

Each MRU offers an interdisciplinary team approach to medical rehabilitation in settings that are convenient, comfortable, and equipped with the latest in medical rehabilitation technology. Team members combine their individual areas of expertise to create the best possible treatment program for the patient.

Individualized Treatment Plans

Each patient in the MRU will receive an individualized treatment plan that includes a full range of services, including 24-hour nursing care and rehabilitation services.

To best serve our patients, individual case management maximizes the medical, social and financial resources available to each patient. A social worker coordinates communication among the team members, the patient and the family to facilitate discharge.

Team conferences are held weekly to review the treatment plan and evaluate the patient's progress. The team members provide the patient and family with recommendations and instructions for continued care.

Referrals for continued rehabilitation services are initiated to meet the patient's ongoing needs.

Latest Technology

The rehabilitation team creates innovative treatments to help patients now and in the future. We are committed to providing our patients with the most up-to-date care and information.

Partners In Rehab participates in the FIM® System of tracking rehabilitative care and patient progress. The FIM™ instrument allows the MRU staff to determine individual motor and cognitive capabilities and develop effective, personalized rehabilitation care plans. The data is compared with regional and national facilities to ensure high quality medical standards are maintained.

The FIM™ rating is comprised of six subsections:

  • Self-care
  • Transfers
  • Bowel and bladder control
  • Communication/language
  • Locomotion
  • Social cognition
