Sara Bensman

Medical School: Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine - Bradenton Campus

Undergraduate College: Canisius College

Hometown: West Seneca, NY

Specialty: Family Medicine

Personal Info: I was born and raised in West Seneca, about 15 minutes from the city of Buffalo, but I went to medical school in Bradenton, Florida. I'm thrilled to settle back into the area and put down some roots! I have a wonderful husband, Greg, and a chocolate lab named Harry. I also have an older sister, and 38 first cousins, most of whom live nearby. In my spare time, I like to cook, travel, ski, read novels, and spend time with my amazing family!

Why this Program? Even though I loved Florida, I realized that there's no place like home! After deciding that I wanted to come back to Western New York, I began looking into all of the family medicine programs around, and quickly came to the conclusion that Sisters would be a great fit! The attendings, residents, and support staff here are extremely approachable and knowledgable. There are plenty of learning opportunities, and the educational environment is welcoming and supportive.

Personal Info: I have a wonderful husband, Adam, whom I spend a lot of time with out birding in local Buffalo parks when we aren't at a Sabres game. I also enjoy vacationing to sandy beaches, training in various martial arts such as Krav Maga, and spending time with my family.

Why this Program? I chose this program because after being fortunate enough to do some of my elective rotations here 4th year of medical school, it was obvious how kind and knowledable everyone was in the program. The atmosphere was like a big happy family, the perfect fit for me, and it was also back in my home town where my husband and family all live.

Medical School: West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine

Undergraduate College: University at Buffalo

Hometown: Jericho, NY

Specialty: Family Practice

Personal Info: Originally from Long Island, I came to Buffalo for undergrad. I met my amazing wife, Tracie, at UB. We both left for graduate school and when it came time to look for training programs, Buffalo felt like home. In my free time I enjoy rock climbing, exploring the outdoors, reading and spending time with family. I look forward to spending more time in Buffalo and laying down some roots.

Why this Program? The first thing that attracted me to this program was location. While rotating through the family medicine program I was impressed at the caliber of residents and that they were at a level I aspired to be. As I spent more time with the program you really get a sense that the program is one big family. All the attendings are intelligent and incredibly nice. The program is unique in the sense that your at a community hospital but are still attached to the Catholic Health System and the University at Buffalo that allows you opportunities you wouldn’t otherwise have. The resident’s clinic is a private practice that allows you your own patients and exposure to a diverse patient population.

Jacob Cukierski, D.O.Jacob Cukierski, D.O.

Medical School: Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine

Undergraduate College: Canisius College

Hometown: Elma, NY

Specialty: Traditional Rotating Intern

Personal Info: As a Buffalo native, I enjoy all of what this region has to offer, although my favorite season is winter. Whether it be ice skating at one of the many local rinks, or taking advantage of the multiple ski resorts nearby, there’s always plenty to do if you don’t mind the cold! When there’s no snow on the ground, I enjoy volunteering as a Track and Field Coach, focusing specifically on pole vault.

Why this Program? Through LECOM, I was fortunate enough to be able to have many rotations through Sisters Hospital, where I was able to interact with the attendings and residents on a very intimate level. During every experience, I felt like part of a family, and everyone was always looking out for one another. This creates an excellent learning environment, with many opportunities to further your skills as a clinician.

Specialty: Traditional Rotating Intern

Personal Info: I grew up just south of Buffalo and am so please to be staying in the area. I have a wonderful husband who is a Specialist in the US Army National Guard.  We have an 8 year old boxer who we love to spoil. I love everything that Buffalo has to offer. I am an avid skier in the winter, and love boating in the summer. I enjoy reading, knitting, and spending time with my wonderful family.

Why this Program? Every time that I rotated at Sisters Hospital as a student, I commented on how friendly and helpful the staff was. It was wonderful knowing that this hospital, near my hometown, could offer everything that I needed in a training program, including kind and friendly co-workers. The quality of the education here is also excellent. Every minute of every day is a learning opportunity. The attendings are always there to push and support the residents to become the best physicians they can be.

Specialty: Family Practice

Personal Info: I'm originally from Tanzania, Africa but have grown up in Buffalo and am truly a Buffalonian at heart. I love the Sabres and Bills and am forever counting down the days until the season starts! In my free time, I enjoy running, biking, hiking and playing hockey. I also love traveling and am slowly crossing off countries and landmarks off my bucket list. Lastly, I come from a wonderful family, but unfortunately am the middle of three brothers.

Why this Program? I went away for my undergraduate and medical school training, and by the end of it all, I decided there was no place like home. So I clicked my heels three times and made up my mind that I wanted to be back in the Buffalo area. While rotating with the program, it truly felt like a welcoming and family-oriented atmosphere. The faculty were all very supportive and willing to teach. It also helped knowing that everybody was invested in the community and wanted to stick around Western New York in the future. I'm very blessed to be a part of this program.

Personal Info: I was born and raised in South Buffalo, which is a fun Irish community (despite my last name, I am, in fact, Irish). I love running, the Buffalo Bills and Disney! Besides working, you can find me browsing the Disney blogs and reading about the Bills. I also enjoy watching most other sports, especially with friends. I have many family members (including my two sisters) who are dentists or in the dental profession, but I am the first physician in my family. I have never run more than a half marathon, but I am slowly working up to a full marathon and I hope to complete one before finishing residency! I also spend a lot of my free time volunteering with the American Cancer Society.

Why this Program? I spent most of my 3rd and 4th years of medical school doing rotations at Sisters Hospital. I really enjoyed getting to know the attendings and residents in the Family Medicine program, and knew it was the right fit for me. Everyone in the program is very kind and very willing to teach. It was also a bonus for me that the hospital is so close to my home, so I am able to still be around my friends and family.
