Students at Health Sciences Charter School Get a First Hand Look at Healthcare Careers

On August 24, 2010, Kenmore Mercy Hospital welcomed students from the Health Sciences Charter School as part of a MASH Camp event, in which students take a behind-the-scenes look at a Catholic Health hospital.

Students were divided into two groups and given 30 minutes with each healthcare professional, who discussed their roles at the hospital. They also toured the hospital and participated in hands-on activities.

During the event, students had access to the following departments:

  • Food and Nutritional Services

  • Human Resources
  • Infection Control
  • Laboratory
  • Operating Room
  • Pharmacy
  • Respiratory Therapy
  • Rehabilitation
  • Physical Therapy
  • Staff Development

When asked which areas of healthcare they were interested in, students' responses varied. They included medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry and dietary, to name a few.

Michael Moley, Senior Vice President of Human Resources, met with the students and said that in our slow economy, the greatest demand for jobs is found in the healthcare industry. He advised them to study and be diligent, as careers in healthcare are readily available to those with the proper education.

“This is an incredible opportunity for each of you," Mr. Moley said. "You will have all the tools to be successful, but you will have to embrace the experience and work hard.”

MASH Camp ended with the students wearing blue scrubs and touring the Operating Room with Linda Butski, RN, BSN, CNDR. With the help of Carol Hilbert, RRTNPS, they were also able to use instruments from the Respiratory Therapy Department.

Catholic Health would like to thank the following persons who made this event possible: Naheed Ali-Sayeed, MS, RD, CNSD (Food and Nutritional Services); Pam Nicastro and Nancy Preskop (Human Resources); Jennifer Carlson, BS, RT, RRT (Infection Control); Michael Wendel, BSMT (Laboratory Department); Linda Butski, RN, BSN, CNDR (Operating Room); Kal Desai; RPh (Pharmacy); Carol Hilbert, RRT-NPS (Respiratory Therapy); Deborah Bedard, PT (Rehabilitation Department); and Sandy Spencer and David Zapfel (Staff Development).
