The baby boomer generation nurses are getting ready to retire, thus putting a demand on all healthcare systems. The need to encourage our youth to pursue a career in nursing is vital now more than ever.
Catholic Health manned a table for Nursing and Respiratory Therapy.
Sandy Szpila a Staff Nurse in the ICU at Sisters Hospital, St. Joseph Campus, shared her healthcare knowledge to encourage students to pursue a career in nursing.
Jon Carlson, Director of Respiratory Therapy at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, enjoyed interacting with the 8th grade students. He brought a Pulse Oximeter to use as a hands-on demonstration and to promote respiratory therapy. He informed the students that many people suffer from lung disease and breathing should not be taken for granted, nor should the appreciation for the skill, training, experience and care given by the respiratory therapist.
The Career Fair was a success with the students looking for answers on what education requirements are needed for a future in the healthcare industry.
Students participating in the career day said they were getting a lot of useful information. They were encouraged to pursue a 2-year degree in Respiratory Therapy at Erie Community College or Genesee Community College.
