Catholic Health’s team had a commanding presence at this year’s Gus Macker Tournament in downtown Buffalo. Winning three games and losing only one, the team came in third, winning the “Toilet Bowl” in the losers bracket and was presented with a trophy as a runner-up following the 3-on-3 corporate challenge on Friday night.
Comprising the five-person team was Catholic Health Chief Operating Officer Mark Sullivan, Vice President of Human Resources Legal Operations Joe Giglia, Jr., and Vice President of Strategic Redevelopment Aimee Gomlak, along with Marty Boryszak, director of Financial Services, Sisters Hospital, St. Joseph Campus, and Willie Hatten, Facilities associate at Nazareth Campus, Continuing Care.
All “stars” in their own right, each member brought some basketball notoriety to the squad. Sullivan, who currently coaches girls’ basketball and played throughout grammar and high school at Nativity and St. Francis respectively, hit a half-court shot in a fundraising contest on his 40th birthday while Gomlak played Division III at Plattsburgh State College and was team captain and Athlete of the Year in her senior year. Boryszak played for Canisius High School and was starting forward on the 1996 NYS Catholic State Championship Team while Hatten was the second leading scorer in Daemen College history.
As for Giglia, who currently plays in both a men’s league in Orchard Park and with former West Seneca East high school teammates, he was grateful to be able to compete in this year’s tourney. After being sidelined last year with a complete rupture of the distal bicep tendon following a painful collision while playing competitive hockey, his post-surgery prognosis was somewhat uncertain. Thanks to weeks of hand therapy, scar management and rehabilitation with Certified Hand Therapist Michelle Knoop of AthletiCare Orchard Park, he’s back playing and credits Knoop with giving him the opportunity.
Congratulations, CH Team!
