Catholic Health officials have been closely monitoring developments from a massive fire at the Steel Works Industrial Park in the former Bethlehem Steel complex at the corner of Route 5 and Lincoln Avenue in Lackawanna. A large plume of smoke has been billowing from the site since early this morning.

Our Emergency Departments were put on alert earlier today for potential patients or first responders complaining of respiratory illnesses or exposure to fire debris, however, we have not seen any patients with conditions related to the fire. Catholic Health has also been in regular communication with the New York State and Erie County Departments of Health and area emergency service providers, who are also monitoring the situation.

Route 5 is closed to traffic between Ridge Road and Lake Avenue and is expected to remain closed for the next 24 hours. Associates and patients who use this route to access neighboring Catholic Health locations will need to find an alternative route.

At this time, no Catholic Health facilities or services are affected by the fire. We will monitor this situation throughout the night and provide further updates if needed. Related information will also be posted on the Catholic Health website at
