Catholic Health AthletiCare, which provides outpatient physical therapy and other rehab services, recently awarded two scholarships to high school seniors for the sixth year.

Athletic trainers and therapists from Partners In Rehab & AthletiCare outpatient clinics volunteer their time in fundraising efforts to provide two $500 scholarships each year.

In order to apply, graduating students must meet the following criteria – attend a high schools contracted with AthletiCare’s Sports Outreach Program or whose parent or guardian is employed by Catholic Health; and plan to pursue a degree in Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Physical Therapy, Physical Therapy Assistant, Occupational Therapy, Occupational Therapy Assistant, or Speech Therapy/Pathology at an accredited college or university.

In keeping with the mission, vision and values of Catholic Health, students must submit an application that includes an essay on their intended allied health field of study and how faith-based values have impacted that decision. Letters of recommendation, volunteer or work experience, and the demonstration of one of Catholic Health’s values in their own life are some of the criteria considered by the committee.

This year, Benjamin Purrington (Grand Island High School), son of Mary Ann Blest (Human Resources), was one of the scholarship honorees. He will be studying physical therapy at Daemen College in the fall.

“I am a people person and want to learn more about the people I care for than simply what is wrong with them. It is my desire to learn what is important to them, and like Joe (Baumgarden) did for me, give them the tools to safely achieve their goals,” stated Ben.

Shannon Smith (Orchard Park High School) plans on studying exercise science at SUNY College at Brockport and continuing on to becoming a physical therapist. Having experienced physical therapy as a sports athlete, Shannon “loves the individual attention given to each patient. Also, no two bodies are exactly the same. Therefore, each patient’s rehabilitation plan will be unique and different.”

Congratulations to Ben and Shannon. The AthletiCare staff wishes them both great success in their studies!
