Joseph Kozakiewicz, Sr. of Blasdell, New York, RRRolled Up the Rim to Win a new 2013 Toyota RAV4 in the Tim Hortons Café & Bake Shop annual contest. His son purchased his winning coffee cup from the Tim Hortons Mercy Hospital of Buffalo lobby location while he was a patient at the hospital.
Winning the car involved a touch of luck by the entire Kozakiewicz family.
A fan and avid customer of Tim Hortons, Joseph Kozakiewicz, Sr. had just received an okay from his doctors to have a cup of coffee so asked his son, Joseph, Jr., to get him a small cup of coffee from the lobby. Wife and mother, Kathy Kozakiewicz, chimed in and suggested he buy a medium cup for a chance to win a prize in the RRRoll Up the Rim to Win Contest. A couple of hours later, daughter Jennifer, decided to finally roll up the rim of the coffee cup. At first, they thought they won a “cup,” thinking a cup of coffee, but then they also thought it looked like the word “car.” On the way out of the hospital, they stopped at the Tim Hortons Café and showed it to the staff. They agreed that it read “car, not cup” and that’s how the story went.

The new car was presented to the Kozakiewicz family in a special ceremony held at the hospital’s main entrance on May 13.
On hand for the presentation were Jon Maurer, Regional Marketing Manager of Tim Hortons; Mercy Hospital President & CEO C.J. Urlaub; Mike Galbraith, Director of Mercy’s Food and Nutrition Services and of ARAMARK Corporation that operates the hospital’s food service; Matt Striffler, ARAMARK’S District Manager; Janet Grimm, Manager, and Kyle Chase, Supervisor of Mercy Hospital’s Tim Hortons Café.
Family members accepting the car on behalf of Joseph, Sr., who was not able to attend the presentation, were his wife Kathy, son Joseph Jr., and daughter Krissy Kozakiewicz.
The car was delivered by West Herr Toyota of Orchard Park.
In addressing the crowd who had gathered for the car giveaway event, Joseph Kozakiewicz, Jr., said, “My father and mother basically took this as a good sign that there are good things to come for my father and he'll be able to get better and…It's just a great thing. Thank you!”

Urlaub. “We opened the Tim Hortons in the lobby two years ago as part of our ongoing efforts across Catholic Health to enhance the hospital experience for our patients, visitors and staff, and it has been a popular spot ever since. We would like to congratulate the Kozakiewicz family and we send our best wishes to Mr. Kozakiewicz on his continued recovery.”
Since mid-February, Tim Hortons Cafe & Bake Shop guests have been rolling up the rims on their hot beverage cups in hopes of winning any one of the $54 million in prizes.
Prizes for the 2013 contest included 40 new cars, 100 $5,000 MasterCard® prepaid cards, 1,000 Napoleon Gourmet Grills, 25,000 $100 Tim Cards and millions of coffee and food prizes. The RRRoll Up the Rim to Win contest usually ends by early April when cup supplies run out.
Prizes may be claimed until May 19, 2013. To date, Kozakiewicz is the only car prize winner claimed in the United States.
As of January 1st, 2012, Tim Hortons had 4,014 systemwide restaurants, including 3,295 in Canada, 714 in the United States (across 11 states) and 5 in the Gulf Cooperation Council. New York State has the most locations, with more than 200.
