Health Sciences Charter School Students Learn About the Physical Therapist Assistant Program at Villa Maria College

On Thursday April 18, 2013, eighteen students and two faculty members from the Health Sciences Charter School participated in Mash Camp at Villa Maria College. Participants learned about the college and the Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Program in meetings with various members of the Villa faculty, staff, and student body.
After a tour of the college, students heard from Andrea Modeste, Academic Success Center Instructional Assistant about transitioning from high school to college. Aimee Murch, Financial Aid Counselor and Grethe Gruarin, Admissions Counselor, spoke with students about the Say Yes program, emphasizing its benefits and the application process.
Deborah Handzlik, Director of Career Development at Villa, spoke to students about how to prepare for a career in health care. Dr. Kim Kotz, PTA Professor, taught a class about goniometry- measuring of joint range of motion. After lunch, students participated in a laboratory session in which they practiced measuring range of motion with their classmates.
The day ended with the HSCS students talking with current PTA students and faculty about the field of Physical Therapy and the PTA Program requirements, internships, and curriculum.
