What is St. Joseph's Day?
St. Joseph the Carpenter was the husband of Mary and the earthly father of Jesus. St. Joseph’s Day is traditionally celebrated on March 19, the birthday of St. Joseph, to honor all fathers.
In the Catholic tradition, St. Joseph’s Day falls during the fasting season of Lent and includes a meatless meal of Italian favorites. People gather at homes, churches, and other locations to enjoy traditional Italian recipes including pastas, fish, sweets, breads and fava beans.
Many other countries join the festivities, and since “Joseph” is such a common name, most families have at least one Giuseppe, Jozefa, José, Pepe, Joe or Josephine to share in the celebration.
