For patients who suffer a stroke, hip fracture, amputation, or other major neurological or orthopedic condition, medical rehabilitation can be an important step on the road to recovery. The Medical Rehabilitation Unit (MRU) at Kenmore Mercy Hospital was recently named among the top 10 percent in the country according to 2011 year-end report by Uniform Data System for Medical Rehabilitation (UDSMR).

This ranking places the MRU at Kenmore Mercy among the best in the country, out of more than 800 similar inpatient centers that were included in the report. This is the third time since 2008 Kenmore Mercy has achieved this recognition.

Medical rehabilitation provides a higher level of care than subacute or short-term rehab. Patients receive intensive, daily physical, occupational and speech therapy to help them regain lost function and independence as they make the transition from hospital to home or to another level of care. Through daily rehabilitation, along with needed medical care and education, patients increase their strength, knowledge and abilities so they may return to their normal activities as soon as possible.

“We’re proud to be rated so highly in comparison to almost 800 rehab hospitals across the U.S.,” said James Czyrny, MD, medical director of Rehabilitation Services for Catholic Health. “This rating is calculated using various criteria and standards including patient outcomes. That means the Medical Rehabilitation Unit at Kenmore Mercy Hospital delivers highly effective care - all thanks to our hard working and dedicated staff.”

UDSMR uses a results-driven evaluation model to identify and recognize MRUs for delivering high quality rehabilitation services that are effective, efficient, and patient-centered.
