Kenmore Mercy Hospital, a member of Catholic Health, recently joined an elite group of only 83 hospitals nationwide that have earned the prestigious Pathway to Excellence designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

It is the first hospital in Western New York to achieve this distinction, which comes after undergoing a rigorous application process.

Pathway to Excellence is awarded to hospitals that meet 12 standards of practice that have been deemed critical to providing a work environment in which nurses can flourish, such as professional development opportunities and competent, accountable leadership.

“Our staff took a lot of pride in pursuing this designation. They worked together to prove that we meet the highest standards of professional nurse practice,” said Cheryl Hayes, MS, ANP, NEA-BC, vice-president of Patient Care Services at Kenmore Mercy Hospital.

“This award demonstrates our commitment to nursing professionalism, staff development, research-based practice, and patient-centered care.”

The application process takes months to prepare, and once submitted, it is reviewed by a team of nurses from around the country. If the application is accepted, the hospital’s nursing staff must then complete a confidential online survey to validate the information in the application. The designation is for three years, after which facilities must reapply.
