Kenmore Mercy Hospital, a member of Catholic Health, is increasing its daytime in-house physician coverage with the addition of two new hospitalists – Shah Faisal, MD, FACP, and Matthew Missert, DO.

As hospitalists, they specialize in inpatient hospital care, focusing on the needs of patients from the time of admission to time of discharge. They do not replace the patient’s primary care physician, surgeon or medical specialists, but work closely with them to provide the best care for patients throughout their hospital stay.

“One of the most significant advantages of this type of program is that a hospitalist is onsite, and can respond immediately to test results and changes in a patient’s condition,” said James Fitzpatrick, vice president of Medical Affairs at Kenmore Mercy.

Dr. Faisal graduated from Catholic Health’s Internal Medicine Residency Program in 2010 and completed a fellowship through the American College of Physicians. He comes to Kenmore Mercy from Rochester General Hospital, where he spent the last two years working as a hospitalist.

Dr. Missert is also a recent graduate of the Catholic Health Internal Medicine Residency Program, where he won both the Austin Flint, MD, House Staff Award, given to the best teaching resident, as well as the Program Director’s Award, given to a graduating resident who best exemplifies the ideals of professionalism, medical ethics, clinical skills and leadership.

Among their responsibilities, hospitalists monitor patients’ conditions throughout their hospital stay; order prescriptions and diagnostic tests, such as x-rays or lab work; and develop treatment plans and consult with other specialists as needed.

The hospitalist program provides added assurance to both physicians and patients that ongoing and immediate care is readily available.
