Sisters Hospital Hosts Free Breast Cancer Screening

Knowledge is power – especially when it comes to the early detection of breast cancer – and an annual mammogram is still a woman’s best protection to safeguard her health. Don’t let the lack of insurance stop you from getting the care you deserve.

Sisters of Charity Hospital and the Cancer Services Program of Erie County are teaming up to offer a free breast cancer screening for women without health insurance on Saturday, February 18 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the M. Steven Piver, M.D. Center for Women’s Health & Wellness at Sisters Hospital. The Center, located in the hospital’s Seton Professional Building at 2121 Main Street in Buffalo, offers state-of-the-art digital mammography.

Light refreshments will be served.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women ages 40-55. According to the National Cancer Institute, one in eight American women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.

Breast Cancer Survivor Credits Screening for Saving Life

Last year, a breast cancer screening hosted by Sisters Hospital detected a cancerous lump in Ann Dyson, a Buffalo woman who didn't have insurance.

"Without this program, I know that I would be walking around with undetected cancer, with no possibility of hope," she said. "I will be forever grateful to those who found my cancer."

Who is Eligible

The free mammography screening takes about 20 minutes to complete and is open to women age 40 or older, who do not have health insurance and have not had a mammogram in the past year.

Cancer Services Program will cover any follow-up testing and treatment if needed.

Eligible participants can also register for additional no cost screening services.
