Wrapping Our Residents in God’s Love

July 19, 2011

Last year, a gift of 40 lap robes was delivered to Chaplain Joe Blatz at McAuley Residence with directions that they be distributed to any resident who needed one. This gesture prompted those in Spiritual Care to wonder — what if we could get one lap robe or knitted blanket made for every long term resident?

Soon, a volunteer rounded up a few of her friends to lend a hand. Word spread to the Kenmore Clergy Association and St. Andrew’s and St. Amelia’s Faith Communities, along with other churches, who joined in the project.

Many volunteers wanted to remain anonymous, as one stated, “It’s not about me, we do this in the name of Christ.”

Each lap robe is more than an artistic creation — they are all prayer shawls. Those who made them did so by offering prayers up for our residents.

Helping hands came from many places — Friday Mass Volunteers who prepared and distributed the blankets, Sr. Ann Louise Hentges who helped residents select “just the right item,” our Activities and Laundry departments, Gail Evans from Environmental Services, who embroidered everyone’s names on their blankets so they wouldn’t be misplaced, and Stacia Kessler, who used sign language to share the message of the gifts to those who are hearing impaired.

Each resident was touched by the generosity shown them — over 110 blankets were given as gifts and McAuley Residence has a supply that can be given to new residents as a welcome gift throughout the end of the year.
