Catholic Health Sleep Centers Join in National Sleep Awareness Week

March 2, 2011

With Daylight Savings Time returning next weekend (March 12), the prospect of “losing” one hour’s sleep may compound an already existing sleep problem for many people. If you find yourself dozing off behind the wheel, tired all of the time, or having trouble concentrating, you may benefit from a sleep study.

The Sleep Centers at Catholic Health can help you get a good night’s sleep by offering sleep testing service for the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of sleep related disorders.

If you experience sleep problems, you are not alone. About 40 million people in the United States suffer from chronic sleep disorders, with an additional 20 to 30 million affected by intermittent sleep-related problems. About one-quarter of adults are at risk for sleep apnea (pauses in breathing during sleep), a serious sleep condition that can contribute to heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure. According to the National Commission on Sleep Disorders, a majority of sleep disorders go undiagnosed and untreated.

St. Joseph Campus SleepCare, an American Academy of Sleep Medicine accredited center, Kenmore Mercy SleepCare, and the Sleep Center at Mercy Hospital offer comfortable and convenient sleep testing services.

Patients undergoing a sleep study spend the night in one of the hospital’s sleep centers where their sleep functions are monitored by specially trained respiratory therapists.

All studies are read and interpreted by Board Certified Sleep physicians who will recommend a course of treatment. Depending on the severity of the condition, treatment options can range from CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) devices, to oral appliances or surgery. Additional treatments may include sleep hygiene or positional therapy.
