Sisters Hospital Receives Grant from Rite Aid Foundation to Fund Osteoporosis Screenings

August 8, 2011

Thirty years ago, most people thought osteoporosis and the broken bones often associated with the condition were part of the normal aging process. That view has changed. Today, medical researchers know there are many ways to protect our bones throughout life.

Despite these advancements, more than 10 million Americans have been diagnosed with osteoporosis, and another 34 million women and men are at risk of developing the disease.

The good news is that it’s never too early or too late to take steps to improve your bone health.

On Thursday, August 18 at 2 p.m., local representatives from Rite Aid Pharmacies will present the Western New York Osteoporosis Resource Center (WNYORC) at Sisters of Charity Hospital with a $9,760 grant from the Rite Aid Foundation. The funds will be used to provide bone density screenings to 500 medically underserved individuals who would not otherwise have access to this diagnostic care.

Through a wide range of community initiatives, WNYORC has brought bone health education and osteoporosis screenings to over 27,000 men, women and children in Western New York since 2003.

Prevention is key in this effort, and requires both awareness and education. Major funding for WNYORC has traditionally been provided by the New York State Department of Health. Last year, due to budgetary pressures, the state limited its funding to community education, excluding clinical services such as preventative screenings.

Health experts knows that preventative screenings reduce injury and disability related to osteoporosis. For that reason, Sisters Hospital sought a committed community partner to underwrite the cost of bone density screenings for women throughout Western New York, particularly the medically underserved and those at risk.
