Mercy Hospital Service Spotlight: Laboratory Services
May 5, 2011
Lab professionals, from left, Anne Orzechowski, Pat Owczarzak, and Candy Farrell converse in the lab’s blood bank.
Did you know that 70 percent of physicians’ diagnoses are based on the results that the laboratory provides?
And, did you know that the laboratory team at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo performs over 1,000,000 tests and processes 15,000 surgical cases per year?
Although most of the laboratory team plays a behind-the-scenes role at the hospital, they perform a vital function in the detection and diagnosis of disease and are a key member of the healthcare team.
We recognize the work of Mercy’s dedicated laboratory professionals who include our:
- medical laboratory technicians and technologists
- pathologist assistants,
- and support staff.
With the exception of pathologists who are medically trained physicians, each laboratory profession requires education ranging from certification from an accredited college to a baccalaureate degree with state licensure.
Staff recently celebrated National Medical Laboratories Week in April, themed Laboratory Professionals Get Results, with a special luncheon, ice cream social, and contests.
