Heart Care Team Leads The Region In Quality

March 31, 2011

Catholic Health’s Heart Center at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo leads the region in safe outcomes for interventional cardiology procedures, including angioplasty and stent placement, according to a recently released report by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH).

In addition, Salvatore Calandra, MD, Medical Director of the center’s interventional cardiology program, was ranked best in the state out of 181 interventional cardiologists with a perfect (0.0% mortality) score in the report.

Mercy Hospital achieved a risk adjusted mortality rate (RAMR) of 0.79%, which was significantly better than the Buffalo area’s three other interventional cardiology programs. As a group, the physicians in the Mercy cardiac program led the region in best outcomes or lowest overall mortality rates.

“Our team at Mercy Hospital has worked hard to improve quality outcomes,” Dr. Calandra said. “Our intense cardiac performance improvement program and the coordinated efforts of our dedicated and talented team have been key factors in raising the bar on quality.”

“It is no longer a secret that the Heart Center at Mercy ranks among the top cardiac care programs, not only locally, but among our peers in New York State and the nation,” Calandra added. “We strive to take advantage of the latest technology and advancements in cardiac care to better serve our patients.”

The Heart Center offers a full range of cardiac care services, including open heart surgery, cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology services for irregular heart rhythms, cardiac implants, and a comprehensive ventricular assist device (VAD) program.

The center is recognized for its expertise in minimally-invasive cardiac treatment, including an advanced radial (wrist) artery approach for interventional cardiology procedures that Mercy physicians have been performing for over 15 years.

In addition, the center features the only robotic assisted da Vinci® heart surgery program in Western New York.
