Kenmore Mercy Hospital First in Area to Receive Knee & Hip Joint Commission Certifications
August 16, 2011
The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations has awarded Kenmore Mercy Hospital, a member of Catholic Health, Disease-Specific Care Certification for Total Knee and Total Hip Replacement services.
Only five hospitals in New York State have earned this designation to date and Kenmore Mercy is the first hospital in the Buffalo area to receive such certification.
Last month, the hospital was also awarded Joint Commission Certification for Advanced Primary Stroke Center.
The Joint Commission, the nation’s most trusted healthcare regulatory body, conducted an extensive, on-site review of Kenmore Mercy’s knee and hip replacement program this summer. Having found no deficiencies, the hospital was awarded the Gold Seal of Approval.
Marcus Romanowski, MD, Chair of Orthopedic Surgery at Kenmore Mercy Hospital, speaks with knee replacement patient Rita Kirk of Amherst.
Expert reviewers looked for compliance for more than 40 standards of care specific to the needs of patients and families, including infection prevention and control, process improvement, leadership and medication management.
“To be the first in the region to achieve these Joint Commission certifications in Total Knee Replacement and Total Hip Replacement recognizes the high standard of care and patient safety that our doctors, nurses, therapists and all of our associates have provided for many years,” said James Millard, President & CEO of Kenmore Mercy Hospital.
Renowned for producing outstanding results, Kenmore Mercy’s knee and hip surgery team is led by Marcus Romanowski, MD.
The hospital offers comprehensive knee and hip replacement services, including presurgery patient education classes, preoperative testing, and a dedicated Knee & Hip Center, of which Dr. Romanowski is the director.
In addition, depending on the patient’s needs, Kenmore Mercy offers a nationally ranked medical rehabilitation unit in the hospital. The physicians, nurses, therapists and staff have received specialized training to provide comprehensive care to encourage the best outcomes.
In addition to the Joint Commission certifications, Kenmore Mercy is a HealthGrades five-star rated hospital for joint replacement (2007 – 2011) and a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement (2010). Kenmore Mercy remains the only hospital in the Buffalo area to achieve this level of HealthGrades ranking.
