Site preparation is underway as Kenmore Mercy Hospital gets ready to break ground on its new Emergency Department.

Initial site preparation includes the relocation of Kenmore Mercy’s MRI trailer, which is located where the new Emergency Department will be built, to the back of the hospital near the Outpatient Entrance.

Plans also call for the demolition of a single-family home owned by the hospital near the site at 207 Westchester Boulevard, which will expand parking for patients and visitors.

This is the fourth Emergency Department renovation for Catholic Health and will complete the modernization and expansion of the health system’s hospital-based emergency services.

The $14.7 million addition, which will be built on the south end of the hospital near Westchester Boulevard, will house the new Emergency Department and an expanded ambulance entrance. Groundbreaking for the new addition is scheduled for later next spring.

Earlier this year, Kenmore Mercy Hospital received final approval from the New York State Department of Health to begin work on the Emergency Department expansion project – one of the hospital’s largest building projects to date – and the relocation of services to accommodate the new construction.

The hospital currently sees more than 27,000 patients each year in its Emergency Department.

“To keep pace with new technology and space needs, we have begun plans to construct a new, state-of-the-art Emergency Department on our hospital campus,” said James Millard, Kenmore Mercy President & CEO.

“As it has been for the last 60 years, our goal is to provide the best facilities and the best care possible to the residents of Kenmore/Tonawanda and the surrounding communities.”

Catholic Health began a total renovation of its emergency services with the construction of a new Emergency Department at the former St. Joseph Hospital in 2005.

In 2010, the system opened the new Emergency Center at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo. Later this month, Catholic Health will unveil the newly renovated and expanded Emergency Department at Sisters of Charity Hospital.

Kenmore Mercy’s new Emergency Department is expected to be completed in late 2013.
