Catholic Health Living Independently For Elders (LIFE) is sponsoring a free Community Health Education Program for health professionals, family members, and caregivers of loved ones with Alzheimer’s or other dementia related conditions entitled, “Becoming an Alzheimer’s Whisperer: Gentle and Loving Management of Challenging Behaviors."
This event will be held on Thursday, October 13 from 6-7:30 pm in the OLV Senior Neighborhood Community Room located at 55 Melroy Avenue in Lackawanna.
This Alzheimer’s caregiver education program is free and open to all.
Nursing professionals attending the program can earn 1.5 CEUs.
Verna Benner Carson, PhD, a nationally recognized author and guest lecturer on behavioral health and Alzheimer’s care, will be the featured speaker.
Dr. Benner Carson is president of C&V Senior Care Specialists, Inc., which provides behavioral health and Alzheimer’s care training to home health and senior care providers. A clinical nurse specialist in psychiatric/mental health nursing and associate professor at Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Carson is best known for her work on the unique needs of the Alzheimer’s patient and a program she developed, “Becoming an Alzheimer’s Whisperer.”
This award winning program provides information and techniques to help caregivers calm the fears of the person caught up in this terrible disease and to courageously enter the Alzheimer’s patient’s world to heal their broken spirits. According to Dr. Benner Carson, some people are naturally gifted at doing this. Through gentle and loving communication, they know how to diffuse agitation before it explodes, how to find joy and humor in the role of caregiver, and how to allow the person with Alzheimer’s to continue to experience joy and humor.
The Alzheimer’s Whisperer program was recognized with a Best Practices in Dementia Care Award by the American Psychiatric Nurses Association in 2005. Dr. Benner Carson has trained thousands of senior care providers and family caregivers on “Becoming an Alzheimer’s Whisperer.”
