Each year, Kenmore Mercy Hospital chooses one doctor to receive the Doctor of Distinction Award. For 2011, that doctor is Thomas J. Brewer, DO, MS, an intensivist in the Intensive Care Unit since 2008. He also serves as director for Catholic Health’s Osteopathic Internal Medicine Training Program.

Dr. Brewer (second left) was presented the Doctor of Distinction Award by Kenmore Mercy Hospital's James Millard, President & CEO, James Fitzpatrick, MD, Vice President of Medical Affairs, and David Serra, MD, President of Medical Staff.

Multiple nominations spoke of Dr. Brewer’s commitment to the Mission and Values of Catholic Health and how he treats all of his patients, families and hospital staff with the utmost respect, dignity, and compassion. Story after story told of how he takes extra care when treating a patient.

In July 2010, Kenmore Mercy launched a 24-hour Intensivist Program, for which Dr. Brewer was instrumental. He continues to dedicate endless hours to maintain its success. This has proven to have tremendous improvement in reducing overall mortality rates in the hospital’s ICU.

“Dr. Brewer takes extra time to discuss the diagnosis and treatment plan with the patient, their family and staff. This extra time spent to share information, collaborate, and listen to concerns, humanizes the often frightening critical care environment. Alleviating the anxiety and fear of the unknown really helps them to focus on healing,” said one nomination.

He received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and a Master of Science in Business Administration from the University of Rochester. He completed his internship and residency at Sisters of Charity Hospital and a fellowship in Critical Care at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. Dr. Brewer is board certified in Internal Medicine and Critical Care Medicine.

Nominations for the Doctor Distinction Award come from hospital staff, volunteers, and fellow physicians, as well as patients and their families.
