Sisters Hospital Sponsors Free Vascular Screening

September 1, 2010

Simple, painless tests can detect life-threatening non-cardiac vascular disease

According to the American Vascular Association, vascular disease continues to be under-diagnosed in the United States, despite its potential for complications like stroke, loss of limbs or death. Often there are no warning signs before serious medical complications occur.

To help detect vascular disease and alert the public to its potential health risks, Sisters Hospital and the Vascular & Endovascular Center of WNY are sponsoring a free Vascular Screening on Saturday, September 25 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The screening will be held at the hospital’s M. Steven Piver, MD Center for Women’s Health & Wellness, located in the Seton Professional Building next to Sisters Hospital at 2157 Main St. in Buffalo.

Smokers most at risk for vascular disease

Michael Zauner had pain in his legs.

"I had a persistent pain in my calf, in my shin; I thought I had shin splints," said Zauner.

But his pain was due to vascular disease. Dr. Paul Anain, chief of vascular surgery at Sisters Hospital, discovered that he had a swollen area in his aorta – an aneurysm.

Aneurysms can be detected by a simple screening ultrasound exam. Sisters Hospital will be doing them free on September 25th. The people most at risk are smokers. Zauner was one until his surgery.

The free screening is open to anyone over 60, who has one of more of the following medical conditions:

  • high blood pressure
  • diabetes
  • family history of heart disease
  • previous heart or leg treatments
  • prior stroke

The screening tests are completely painless and take about 30 minutes to complete. The screening program at Sisters is part of a national initiative sponsored by the American Vascular Association.

Participants must meet eligibility requirements and appointments are necessary.
