MRU at Kenmore Mercy Achieves Top National Ranking
May 26, 2009
The Partners In Rehab Medical Rehabilitation Unit (MRU) at Kenmore Mercy Hospital has been recognized as one of the top inpatient rehabilitation facilities (IRF) in the United States. It was recently announced that the hospital’s MRU was ranked in the top 10 percent of 813 qualifying inpatient rehabilitation facilities (IRF) in the United States for 2008 by the Uniform Data System for Medical Rehabilitation (UDSMR).
“To be recognized in the top 10 percent in the nation is a significant achievement for our Partners In Rehab MRU team,” said Christina Sage, Vice President of Catholic Health Rehabilitation. “The honor is even more special because the UDSMR is located right in Buffalo and is the nationally recognized benchmark for this level of care.”
The rankings were determined by using UDSMR’s program evaluation model (PEM), a tool which identifies and recognizes facilities that perform at a high level. The goal of the PEM Report Card is to recognize high-performing facilities for their delivery of quality patient care that is effective, efficient, timely and patient-centered.
“Inpatient Medical Rehabilitation Units offer more aggressive treatment for patients who experience hip fractures, strokes or other neurological impairments. In Catholic Health, we are proud to offer this specialized care at Kenmore Mercy Hospital and Mercy Hospital of Buffalo,” added Angelo Ventresca, Director of Partners In Rehab MRU. “It is important for patients to know that certain conditions do require a higher level of care than may be found in subacute/short-term rehab facilities. Our goal is to provide patients high quality, person-centered care in a location that offers them the best opportunity to maximize their recovery.”
This is the third year that UDSMR has issued these awards. The PEM Report Card was developed as part of a proactive solution to the Institute of Medicine’s 2006 recommendation to Congress that every Medicare provider be reimbursed on a pay-for-performance basis.
“We are pleased to present this award to Partners In Rehab MRU at Kenmore Mercy Hospital in recognition of the excellent care it provides to its patients,” said Dr. Sam Markello, Associate Director of UDSMR. “We look forward to working with Partners In Rehab MRU at Kenmore Mercy Hospital and the other top performing facilities across the country that rank in the top 10 percent to improve care in all inpatient rehabilitation facilities.”
