Interior Work Underway for Mercy’s New ER

December 9, 2009

Construction work on Mercy Hospital’s new Emergency Department is progressing quickly as hospital officials set their sights on an April 2010 opening. With the arrival of winter, Robert Hawks, construction project manager for Mercy Hospital, is pleased to report that the new addition is completely enclosed with the final placement of the exterior windows.

Inside the new structure, all the metal stud work that forms the rooms has been completed and crews have begun installing dry wall. Temporary heating systems have also been installed allowing construction crews to work comfortably throughout the winter months.

Outside the building, workers recently completed the structure for the rooftop heliport and the stone work for the meditation garden. They have also begun laying concrete for the ambulance entrance, sidewalks and driveway.

Local officials, chamber of commerce presidents, and newspaper editors from Buffalo's Southtowns communities tour the new hospital addition.

In addition, crews have started placing the exterior stone finish on the new addition.

In mid-November, the hospital began conducting “hardhat” tours for associates and other interested groups to view the progress on the ER construction project. On December 4, 2009, local officials, chamber of commerce presidents and newspaper editors from Buffalo’s Southtowns communities toured the hospital addition. During their visit, Mercy Hospital President and CEO C. J. Urlaub updated the group on the ER project and other recent developments at the hospital. Preview tours will continue to be scheduled periodically over the next few months.

The $32 million construction project will result in a 46,000 square-foot addition to the front of the hospital. When completed, the state-of-the-art ER facility will feature 34 private treatment rooms, including three airborne isolation rooms, and two resuscitation rooms. There will also be expanded space for physician staff, nursing, and support services.
