Dedication Held for Monument and Sacred Site

July 10, 2009

A blessing and dedication of a monument and sacred site for Mercy Hospital’s Perinatal Bereavement Program was recently held at Holy Cross Cemetery in Lackawanna. Last fall, Mercy Hospital began a Perinatal Bereavement Program for patients who have lost a pregnancy prior to 20 weeks.

A monument and sacred site for the program was made possible through generous contributions from Holy Cross Cemetery which donated a burial site, Stone Art Memorial which donated a marker, and Cannan Funeral Home.

During the dedication ceremony, Mary Kienzle, Vice President of Mercy Hospital’s Mission Integration, prayed, “We dedicate this site for the burial of babies who have died at Mercy Hospital under 20 weeks. We pray this memorial will provide consolation for those who have suffered the loss of their baby.”

The first Burial Service took place on June 27, 2009. Burial services will be held twice each year. The stone monument features a symbol of hands releasing butterflies with the inscription, The Gift of Love is Forever
