Although the first baby of the year is always in the spotlight for the New Year, Mercy Hospital of Buffalo paid some well-deserved attention to the last baby of the year too. Thanks to a new program sponsored by H&R Block, Hamburg resident Patti Hartel and son Ayden who arrived at 12:38 pm on December 31st, weighing 5 pounds, 12 ounces, received a diaper bag full of goodies, including a free tax return and bib announcing “I’m a Tax Deduction.”

David Schlierf, District Manager for H&R Block, stopped by Mercy Hospital’s Maternity Unit on New Year’s Day to present the gift to Mercy’s Last Baby of the Year, Ayden, and his family. According to Schlierf, H&R Block recently introduced the Last Baby of the Year program in hospitals across the country.

Mercy’s First Baby of the Year title went to baby girl Heidi Kathryn Becker, daughter of Rebecca and Bill Becker of West Seneca. Heidi was born on New Year’s Day at 5:55 am, weighing 8 pounds, 15 ounces.

Now, both of these new bundles of joy will have something to talk about for years to come.
