Continuing & Home Care Foundation

Catholic Health’s Continuing & Home Care Foundation supports Catholic Health's Continuing Care and Home Care ministries.

The foundation raises funds to help provide:

• Care for seniors in nursing and adult homes;
• Physical, occupational and speech therapies in all kinds of settings to assist our aging population in maintaining independence;
• and, care at home.

The funds raised through the foundation make innovations possible, such as household-model nursing homes, which allow seniors to live and receive care at a facility that feels like home. The Mercy Nursing Facility at OLV is one such home and is part of the OLV Senior Neighborhood, formerly the Our Lady of Victory Hospital, which we transformed into a state-of-the-art living facility for senior citizens.

Linda Richards Honors Father Through Donation

Linda Richards will forever feel indebted to Catholic Health’s Home Care team of professional caregivers. 

In recent years, Linda’s father, Robert Raux, experienced a rapid decline in health. For the past five years, he’s received dialysis three times a week for a chronic kidney issue. He suffered from a painful condition called spinal stenosis, which caused severe back pain. Then, in November 2011, he was involved in a near-fatal car accident.

As a result of injuries suffered in the accident, Robert developed chronic non-healing wounds on both of his heels. When he was released from the hospital to subacute and rehab care, Catholic Health’s Home Care also was also put into place.

“He loved the staff coming in. His view was ‘they are here to help me and I’m going to do everything I can to help myself,’” Linda said.

Robert, a retired Marine and volunteer firefighter for fifty years with the Reserve Hose Company in West Seneca, was tough, dedicated, and determined to help himself despite his challenges. 

“They made sure that the healing that began in subacute rehab continued, and they made sure he kept moving,” Linda recalled.

Robert Attended Grandson's Wedding, Thanks to Recovery

By the date of his grandson’s wedding in the summer of 2012, Robert was back on his feet. 

“We’re blessed that he was able to be at my son’s wedding. He was up and walking. Last summer was the best summer in the past 8 years; he was moving, exercising and happy.”

"It Gave Me Comfort that Someone Was Looking Out for Him"

The team from Home Care focused not only on his recovery and wound healing, but on compassion, kindness, and Robert’s quality of life. His daughter Linda, who is also the Director of Technology for Catholic Health’s Home Care and Continuing Care ministries, was so grateful.

“You can’t be there everyday with your parent. It gave me comfort that someone was looking out for him, which is like someone also looking out for me,” Linda said. 

Donation Honors Life and Legacy

In November 2012, at the age of 81, Robert passed away, and his daughter decided to honor his life and legacy by giving a gift to the Continuing & Home Care Foundation.

“I know how much they gave to my father and I wanted to give back,” Linda said. “They cared. They really did and they loved working with him.”

“I really think that giving back and showing appreciation through donations is an important way to enable other people to have that same advantage and show you care.”
